New Students

New students will receive their SMU ID Badge during their program's new student orientation (more info below).

Faculty and  Staff

New faculty and staff will be issued their SMU ID Badge during their new hire orientation organized by the Office of People and Culture.

For Lost, Stolen, or Misplaced Badges

Please visit the Badging Office during office hours to obtain a replacement badge. If you work or attend class at the Fresno, Sacramento, or San Francisco Peninsula Campus, please inform the administrative office that you need a replacement badge. Your replacement badge will be issued within one business day of receipt of the request. 

Students, faculty, and staff are required to wear their badges at all times while at SMU. Students, faculty, and staff are not allowed to enter a secured area by using another person's badge or piggybacking (e.g. following an individual or group that has their badge(s).  To help ensure the safety and security of our campus communities, our badging policy will be strictly enforced.

All lost, stolen, or misplaced badges should be reported immediately to the Badging Office for security concerns. Replacing an SMU ID Badge is subject to a $25 fee.

Congratulations on being accepted to SMU.

To get you started on the right foot, we need a little help from you so we can have you SMU ID Badge ready to go for your first day. Your SMU ID Badge will be used to access campus buildings, classrooms, offices, and clinical settings, so it is an integral part of your experience.

Using the guidelines below, please submit your photograph to badging@samuelmerritt.edu at least 30 days prior to your orientation (unless another deadline is provided) to ensure that your ID badge is ready for you.

Guidelines for ID Badge Photos 
  • Front view headshot, taken from three to five feet away (your face should not be covered by hair)
  • No filters
  • No hats, sunglasses, or “gag” glasses. Prescription eyeglasses is okay
  • Eyes open and visible. Try to avoid any glare if wearing prescription eyeglasses
  • Avoid shadows by having sufficient light
  • Proper attire for official SMU ID Badge picture: Business Casual
  • Use white or light smooth background (a standard white wall works well). Please, no glamour/fancy or photoshopped backgrounds
  • Use a standard digital image format (.jpeg, .png, .gif)
  • Standard size is 150 x 180 pixels (2 MB file size limit). You may need to resize your original image.

  • Use a plain white or light background
  • Make sure you have good, balanced light on your face

Submit Your Photo
  1. Send an email to badging@samuelmerritt.edu
  2. The email subject line should read: "New <program> ID Badge Photo"
  3. In the body of the email, include:
    • Your First and Last Name
    • Your Student ID (nine-digit number including all zeros)
    • Your program of study (e.g. PT, PA, ELMSN, special status, etc.)
    • Your term and year starting (e.g. Spring 2021)
    • Your campus (e.g. Oakland, Fresno, Sacramento, San Francisco Peninsula, or Online)
       
  4. Attach your photo

Oakland City Center Campus Parking

1000 Broadway Garage ($12 discounted daily rate)

  • Chaser tickets are now available at the SMU front reception desk (12th Street entrance).
  • Please ask one of our Facilities or Security personnel at front reception for a chaser ticket before returning to the garage.
  • At the exit, insert your parking ticket first followed by the chaser ticket to receive the discounted daily rate.

Marriott City Center/Oakland Convention Center Garage ($20 discounted daily rate)

  • The SMU front reception desk now has a self-service validation machine for daily discounted parking at the Marriott Garage.
  • The validation machine is on the lower left side of the SMU front reception desk.
  • Insert the side of the parking ticket with the bar code facing up into the slot on the front of the validation machine. 
  • The machine will print a validation bar code onto the ticket for the discounted rate. Use the validated ticket at the the machines on the 3rd or 4th floors or at the exit. 

City Center West Garage ($20 discounted rate for entry before 9:00am)

  • Download the ParkMobile app
  • Create an account and add payment
  • Open ParkMobile and enter the parking zone number
  • Select "Early-Bird Rate - $20"

Fresno, Sacramento, and San Francisco Peninsula Campuses  
SMU's Fresno, Sacramento, and San Francisco Peninsula campuses have free parking on site. This is on a first come, first serve basis.
