Podiatry Student Research Wins High Honors

Research by five students from Samuel Merritt University’s (SMU) California School of Podiatric Medicine (CSPM) about the impact of titanium hardware placed inside the foot during surgery won third place in a national competition at the Kaiser Permanente Foot and Ankle Summit last month.

The students submitted the original research entitled, “Type IV Cell-Mediated Hypersensitivity Reaction Caused by Titanium Implant Following Medial Displacement Calcaneal Osteotomy and First Metatarsal-Cuneiform Arthrodesis,” which was a case study about a patient with postoperative incision dehiscence and devascularization of cortical surfaces in contact with titanium hardware that was placed in the foot during a surgical procedure.

“It was an honor to have our research recognized by some of the most well-respected and well-known podiatric physicians in the country,” said Stephen Kriger, CSPM Class of 2018

The student’s research has subsequently been accepted to be presented at the American Podiatric Medical Association National Conference in Philadelphia in July.
