Oakland, CA – Feb. 13 – Samuel Merritt University (SMU), a leader in healthcare education for over a century, proudly announces that its Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) program has been ranked 4th among MSN programs in California. This prestigious recognition highlights SMU’s commitment to delivering exceptional nursing education and equipping students with the skills to excel in today’s competitive healthcare landscape.

"We are absolutely elated to receive this prestigious recognition, a true testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence in nursing education,” says Carmen Ward-Sullivan, PhD, RN, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, College of Nursing. “Our dedication to high academic standards and outstanding student outcomes ensures that every graduate is not only practice-ready upon graduation but also equipped to make a lasting impact in the field of healthcare. This honor fuels our passion to continue shaping the next generation of compassionate, skilled and innovative nursing professionals!"

SMU’s MSN-FNP program stands out for its rigorous curriculum, exceptional faculty and strong clinical partnerships. The instructional delivery format fosters personalized instruction and mentorship, ensuring students receive the individualized support needed to excel. With a strong emphasis on hands-on clinical training, students engage in realistic patient simulations and diverse clinical placements, equipping them with the practical skills necessary for real-world practice.

To further enhance clinical readiness, SMU has expanded its partnerships, providing students with greater access to preceptorship opportunities across a variety of healthcare settings. These experiences expose future NPs to a diverse range of high-quality clinical environments, ensuring they graduate with confidence and competence. Additionally, curriculum updates have strengthened the program, incorporating the latest healthcare guidelines, cutting-edge technologies and a renewed emphasis on health equity and advocacy.

The program’s faculty, all practicing NPs, bring real-world expertise into the classroom, ensuring students receive an evidence-based, practice-oriented education. Combined with the expansive preceptorship opportunities, immersive training and coursework aligned with evolving healthcare standards, SMU prepares graduates to excel in certification exams and transition seamlessly into clinical practice.

SMU graduates achieve one of the highest job placement rates within six months of graduation. This ranking highlights the impactful contributions of SMU’s MSN-FNP graduates, who are driving positive change in primary care, underserved communities and healthcare leadership. Recognized for their clinical expertise, patient-centered care and dedication to reducing healthcare disparities, SMU alumni play a vital role in expanding access to quality care, particularly in high-need areas, and advancing health equity.

With more than 115 years of experience in healthcare education, SMU continues to evolve to meet the needs of the industry. In response to the growing demand for skilled nursing professionals, the University is launching two new programs: the Master of Science in Nursing – Executive Leadership and the Master of Science in Nursing – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. These programs will equip graduates with the expertise to lead in healthcare settings and provide specialized mental health care, further strengthening SMU’s commitment to shaping the future of healthcare.

Beyond academic excellence, SMU remains deeply engaged in community initiatives. The University was recognized at Assemblymember Mia Bonta’s 3rd Annual Assembly District Awards Luncheon, an event that honors individuals and organizations making a significant impact in their communities.
