About Me

My clinical background is in nursing, having worked a variety of settings as a Registered Nurse. I have been a passionate social justice advocate, working on campaigns for nuclear disarmament, peace and justice in the Americas, single payer health care, end capital punishment, and the nurse-to-patient ratio legislation and regulation in California. I have been an avid alpine skier, bicyclist, camper, swimmer, traveler and caretaker of many canines. Several orthopedic injuries have hampered my most vigorous outdoor activities, but nothing will ever stop me from listening to all kinds of really great music.

Education

After ten years of working as a Certified Orderly, Nurse Assistant, and Home Health Aide, I received a BSN from the University of San Francisco, School of Nursing in 1992,  a MSN -Clinical Education from Holy Names University in Oakland, CA, in 2007, and completed all of the coursework requirements in the Education Doctorate in Learning Technologies at the Graduate School of Psychology and Education at Pepperdine University in 2015 except the dissertation requirement.

Teaching Interests

I am a strong advocate of immersive learning, of which simulated clinical situations are but one type. By combining the cognitive, affective, and pyscho-motor domains into a learning activity, students can better recall the lessons and will have experienced what they may feel in a true clinical encounter in advance.

Scholarly Interests

My Master degree thesis was an examination of reflective thinking among a diverse population of nursing students from pre-licensure to graduate level at four programs of nursing in the San Francisco bay area. My preliminary mixed methods doctoral proposal explored the impact of cultural dimensions on the teaching of debriefing techniques during a period of substantial global growth of simulation-based education in the health professions, highlighting institutions located throughout east Asia, specifically in Japan, China, Korea, and Singapore.
