Army of ACEs with Dr. Nadine Burke Harris
Join us for an afternoon with California Surgeon General, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris as she provides a deeper understanding of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and presents evidence of how assessing for ACEs transforms patient care. 1 credit hour will be offered by Bay Area Black Nurses Association BRN CEP#9053.
In addition to this, the lecture aims to meet our institutions' learning outcomes:
- Educate students to become highly skilled and compassionate health care professionals who positively transform the experience of care in diverse communities.
- Embody ethical and professional responsibilities to effectively serve individuals from diverse backgrounds, our profession, and society with compassion, caring, and humility.
- Integrate our understanding of structural and social determinants of health into professional practice.
- Advocate, as agents of change, to improve health and health care especially for structurally vulnerable populations.
Her book, "The Deepest Well" skillfully conveys her groundbreaking research related to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the potential lifetime effects of childhood adversity and toxic stress on the body’s systems and wellbeing. Burke Harris is a thought and practice leader who, as founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point, developed a screening tool and evidence-based interventions that can minimize or prevent lifelong illness. Beginning January 1, 2020, DHCS will provide a supplemental payment to Medi-Cal providers for conducting ACEs screening for adults and children with full-scope Medi-Cal coverage, using Proposition 56 funds.
