This state-of-the-art facility will provide students with unparalleled opportunities to pursue their passion for healthcare in a region where the need for skilled professionals is rapidly growing.

Grand Opening Ceremony

The grand opening ceremony, held on Thursday August 1, 2024, was a long-awaited occasion attended by university leaders, faculty, students, community members, and local dignitaries.

President Ching-Hua Wang delivered a heartfelt welcome speech, followed by Provost Brian Clocksin, College of Nursing Dean Steven Rush, Fresno ABSN Program Director Keisha Lewis-Nesbitt, Congressman Jim Costa, Assemblyman Jim Patterson, and Itzi Robles on behalf of Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula’s Office. Each speaker's remarks shared a common thread: highlighting the university's commitment to excellence in healthcare education and its dedication to serving the Central Valley.

In her speech, President Wang remarked, "The community here is enthusiastic about SMU’s presence and there is a dire need for healthcare workers in the Central Valley. And thanks to our leadership, faculty, and supporters, we are finally able to open our Fresno campus and launch our Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program." She continued on to say, "The beauty of this program is that no matter what bachelor's degree you have, you can enroll in the ABSN program and in one year’s time, you can graduate and start a new career in nursing.”

Following the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting, guests were provided guided tours of the state-of-the-art facilities that included simulation labs, classrooms, the library, and student lounge in addition to learning about other SMU program offerings at other campuses.

 A Vision Realized

The vision for the Fresno campus began with a clear mission: to address the healthcare workforce shortages in the Central Valley by providing high-quality education and training to aspiring healthcare professionals. This new campus, located in the heart of Fresno, is equipped with cutting-edge technology and innovative learning environments designed to prepare students for the complexities of modern healthcare.

 State-of-the-Art Facilities

The Fresno campus boasts advanced simulation labs, modern classrooms, and collaborative spaces that foster an engaging learning experience. Students will have access to the latest medical equipment and technology, enabling them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their chosen fields. The campus also features a student lounge and library.

Programs Offered

SMU's Fresno campus offers an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program with plans to expand program offerings. The ABSN degree is designed as a 12-month fast-track program for students who currently hold a non-nursing degree. With a focus on hands-on learning and clinical experiences, graduates are well-prepared to provide exceptional care to their patients.

Community Impact

The opening of the Fresno campus is not just a significant achievement for SMU but also for the entire Central Valley community. By training healthcare professionals locally, SMU aims to retain talent within the region, addressing critical shortages and improving access to quality healthcare for residents. The university's presence in Fresno is expected to stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance the overall well-being of the community.

Looking Ahead

As SMU's Fresno campus opens its doors to the first cohort of 48 students, the university remains dedicated to its mission of fostering academic excellence, advancing healthcare practice, and serving the diverse needs of the community. The new campus stands as a testament to SMU's unwavering commitment to shaping the future of healthcare through education, innovation, and community engagement.
