Mrs. Luey has had an illustrious career as a spouse, mother, and health professional for over 65 years. Among the work and honors Rose has acquired, they include the City of Oakland’s Mother of the Year, Disaster Nurse Chair of the American Red Cross (Oakland Chapter), founding member of Asian Health Services, Alameda County Health Care Services, and a bilingual Public Health Nurse (PHN). In 1984, Rose she undertook the reorganization of Alameda County’s Perinatal Hepatitis B Program, which was in danger of losing its funding. Elements of the new protocol were used as a model for the state’s program. At the end of the Viet Nam War, Rose volunteered as a PHN to meet first arrivals from Vietnam (baby airlift and boat people) at Oakland Airport and relocation sites to assess health status, make referrals, and facilitate care for the ill at local hospitals. Rose and her spouse, Tom, have been married for 60 years and still live in Oakland. In 2008 they established the Tom C. and Rose Lim Luey ’51 Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund at Samuel Merritt University. A significant endowment, the scholarships are awarded annually to nursing students.
