Spring Faculty Research Symposium

When: May 4, 2017  9am - 3pm
Where: Health Education Center (HEC) Fontaine Auditorium on the SMU Oakland campus.

Every spring the Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Development Committee host a Faculty Research Symposium to celebrate and honor faculty scholarly contributions featuring podium and poster presentations.  The symposium provides a forum for faculty to share and learn more about each other’s research. The Faculty Development Committee provides peer-review that allows faculty to receive feedback on their scholarship in a supportive environment.

In 2016, faculty participated in record numbers with thirty seven poster presentations, a lively poster slam (1-2 minute poster summaries) and twelve formal podium presentations.

Faculty can submit abstracts for both poster and podium presentations through mid-March.

The Faculty Research Symposium features a variety of types of scholarship.

  • The Scholarship of Discovery
  • The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
  • The Scholarship of Application/Service
  • The Scholarship of Integration

The definitions of scholarship are in the Faculty Handbook

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning provides faculty a way to both deepen their teaching practice as well as their scholarship. The Office of Academic Affairs offers a unique grant that incentivizes faculty to experiment with new teaching modalities and tools through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Improving Teaching with Technology Grants. Over 110 grants have been award since 2013. View the grant reports.
