Please follow these procedures to confirm that your financial aid is processed in a timely manner to meet your financial needs.

FAFSA: All prospective and current students wishing to apply for financial aid must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students can complete the FAFSA online at and use the Samuel Merritt University school code of 00701200. If you have already completed your FAFSA you can check the status by going on-line to or call the U.S. Department of Education at 1.800.4.FEDAID.

FINANCIAL AID AWARD: Approximately two weeks after completion of your FAFSA, the results will be sent to the Financial Aid office at Samuel Merritt University. Shortly after the Financial Aid office receives your FAFSA results, you should receive the Financial Aid Award via online at NETPARTNER. The Financial Aid Award Packet will include your award offer and document requests. The award letter details your Academic Year Budget. Please complete all requested documents and online requirements within two weeks of receipt so that the financial aid office may begin processing your financial award immediately. Delays in returning these documents may result in delayed receipt of your financial awards. Once your Financial Aid file is in order and all necessary documentation have been provided to the Financial Aid Office you may sit back and relax.

COMPLETE AN ONLINE ENTRANCE LOAN COUNSELING: The second step towards completing the Direct loan application process is to meet the Entrance Loan Counseling requirement. To complete the entrance counseling on-line, please go to and log-in with your FSA ID to proceed. This is valuable information about your student loan and it will quiz you on your understanding of the Direct Loan program. Once you have completed the Entrance Loan Counseling, Samuel Merritt University will be informed that you have meet this requirement.

COMPLETE MASTER PROMISSORY NOTES: Go to and complete the Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford AND Graduate Plus Master Promissory Notes. Upon arriving at the website, log-in with your FSA ID to proceed. If you are apply for both Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford Loan and Graduate Plus Loan, you will need to complete two separate Master Promissory Notes.

REFUND: Prior to each semester, the award funds are electronically posted towards your tuition account. Should there be a surplus of funds and your financial aid award exceeds your school costs, you will be issued a refund check to use for supplies and living expenses. Refund checks are issued by Student Accounts within the ten working days of receipt of all your financial aid. Refund checks that have been issued will be mailed directly to your current home address, so remember to keep your contact information up to date! You also have the option of signing up for Direct Deposit on SMURF under Finances.
